Latest 2011-2012 Registration Update Updated 9/8/11

As of September 7th, all age groups are closed - the team is full.  We will not be accepting any additional swimmers for the season/  Those of you who were put on a waiting list at the YMCA on  Wednesday will be contacted by Friday, September 9th to let you know if you are on the team or not.  If you do not get a spot on the team and you have already registered online, you will be contacted and your money will be refunded.  Thank you.

Returning swimmers

Returning swimmers are those swimmers who swam for the 2010 - 2011 season and participated in the required three YMCA meets as well as the championship meets for which they qualified. Swimmers that participated in Spring Tune-up (2011) and / or Summer Long Course (2011) only are not considered returning swimmers and must register as a new swimmer. Any new swimmer who had siblings on the team last season will be treated as a returning swimmer.

At this time, returning swimmers may still register, but only if there is room in their age group and they will be charged a $50 late fee.

Registration for returning swimmers is now open. You must do both the online registration, as well as register in person at the YMCA to be fully registered. Returning swimmers are guaranteed a spot on the team if they register by September 1, 2011.  After September 1, 2011, returning swimmers may still register, but only if there is room in their age group and will be charged a $50 late fee.

New swimmers
New swimmers are those swimmers who did not swim for BBD last winter, or those that only swam Spring Tune-up and/or Long Course. If you swam with BBD in years past, but did not swim last year, you are considered a new swimmer again. First time swimmers that had siblings swim for BBD last season will be treated as returning swimmers.

Registration will begin for new swimmers on September 7th at 6am at the YMCA. To register, you must complete both the online
registration as well as register in person at the YMCA. There will be laptops available at the YMCA if you would like to do both at the YMCA on the 7th.  Registration will be on a first-come, first-served basis at the YMCA. Registering early online does not get any type of priority or guarantee a spot on the team.

Once an age group is full, we will start a wait list. Again, the only way to get on the wait list is to come in to the YMCA. If you are wait listed you we will contact you by Friday, September 9th to let you know if there is room on the team for your swimmer.

2011-2012 BBD Financial Requirements

In order to compete, a YMCA swimmer must have a current YMCA membership.  Different types of memberships are available, including family memberships.  The fees for these memberships are separate from the team fees associated with BBD.  Various methods of payment are available.  The BBD team fee primarily covers salaries of the coaching staff and outside pool facility rental.  It also helps to offset the costs incurred relating to the weekly BBD newsletter, yearbook, administrative assistance, as well as all entries for YMCA dual and championship meets. For membership information, call the Birmingham Family YMCA at 248-644-9036 or visit YMCA of Metropolitan Detroit - Birmingham Family YMCA.

To operate successfully, BBD must gather funds from other sources as well.  Dual meets, YMCA/USA invitational and championship meets and Booster donations help to support the program.  Parent participation is vital to the success of each of these avenues.  Swimmers qualifying for our National Team also participate in various fundraising activities coordinated by a parent volunteer.  In addition, an activity fee ($65.00) is required from each swimmer upon registration to defray the cost of after practice snacks and various social activities organized by the age group parents.

This additional income is often used to supplement equipment needs (computer, pool practice aids, etc.) .  A portion of these funds also provides for incentives for the swimmers and coaching staff, social events and defraying a portion of costs related to the National Team.  A donation to the YMCA's Partners' Campaign (to be used at the Birmingham YMCA) is also made through these funds.

As you can see, the expenses of running a large successful program are extensive and varied.  Some additional expenses you can expect to incur during the season will include:  competitive swimsuits (swimmers are required to purchase a BBD team suit, which should be reserved for competition using separate suits for practice), swim goggles (you may want to purchase many pairs), swim caps (only swim caps with the BBD logo may be worn during competition), miscellaneous travel expenses, and entry fees for USA meets and YMCA invitational meets.
